Company History
GGS was originally founded in 1969 in
Gettysburg, PA as Caxton Company, a typesetting company.
It was later moved to York, PA.
It was renamed General Graphic Services (GGS) in the mid-1970s, and
the company began to produce technical publications due to its
expertise in merging electronic text and graphics.
The company was purchased in 1988 by Paul V. Kilker following a
successful leveraged buyout and in late 1996 the name was changed to
GGS Information
Services, in an effort to better reflect an expanded and growing
offering of technical information, book publishing, database
management, and document imaging services.
In March 2002, GGS acquired DocuScan USA, a small local document
scanning, imaging, and archiving company located in York, PA.
In late 2003, the company created two distinct and separate
divisions – GGS Book Services and GGS Technical Publication Services
- to better meet the individual needs of specific customers in the
book publishing industry and those engaged in the manufacture or
production of highly specialized or technical equipment.
In early 2004, the company opened its first international office in
Chennai, India, in the province of Tamil Nadu along India’s eastern
coast, as GGS Information Services India Private Limited (Pvt.
Ltd.).
In early 2008, the GGS Book Services division was acquired by
PreMedia Global USA Inc, allowing GGS to focus fully on technical
information development and delivery worldwide.
Today, GGS Technical Publication Services is the world’s largest
privately held, global technical information services provider.
